Is more remote play worth $30 extra?

Short answer: OnlyPet Buddy is the stronger fit if you want to check on your cat, start a game from your phone and have the robot return to a nearby, detectable charging dock. ROLA Mini costs less and covers mobile viewing and conversation. At the listed prices of $199 and $169, Buddy's extra $30 buys manual laser play, included teaser accessories, obstacle avoidance and short scheduled patrols—not a sharper camera category, since both offer 2K video.
Key takeaways
- Both robots let you move the camera and speak to your pet remotely.
- Buddy adds manual laser play, included teasers and scheduled nearby movement.
- Buddy's automatic return requires a detectable dock; it cannot reliably return from another room.
- ROLA Mini offers a lower price, an included memory card and a manufacturer claim of extended use between charges.
- Choose around your cat's interests, your floor layout and how much time you want to spend operating the robot.
What do you want to do after opening the camera
During a break at work, you might want to see where your cat is resting, say hello or spend a few minutes playing. A mobile camera can help you change the viewpoint when your cat is outside the original frame. The next question is what you can do once you reach them.
For an owner who wants to participate in play as well as watch, Buddy offers useful additions. For someone who mainly wants a mobile view and occasional conversation, Mini's lower price may be enough.
This guide is published by OnlyPet, which makes and sells Buddy. The comparison uses supplied product documentation and manufacturer information, together with the internal cat-play records provided for this article. OnlyPet's public home-use research is identified separately below.

The battery durations above use different manufacturer descriptions. Six hours and 25 days are not comparable measurements of continuous driving or streaming, so they do not establish a runtime winner.
Buddy gives you more ways to start a short game
With Buddy, you can steer toward an accessible area, speak to your cat and manually move a laser point through the app. The included wand and teaser accessories also provide physical play options. Having both in the listed package is a practical reason to consider the extra $30 if remote play is why you want a robot.
The practical benefit is having different ways to invite interaction. A cat may follow a physical teaser, watch the moving device or choose to ignore it. More options let you try an approach that fits your cat, without promising that every cat will respond.
Mini also supports playful actions, sounds and expansion accessories. Its lack of a laser does not mean it cannot entertain a pet. Buddy's distinction is the particular combination of manual laser control and the physical accessories in its listed package.
What our short cat-play comparison recorded
In OnlyPet's internal paired observation, 10 cats each tried both robots for three minutes on separate days, with five cats trying Buddy first and five trying Mini first. Buddy used its included teaser accessories and one minute of manual laser play; Mini used its tested basic package without separately purchased toys.
| Play observation | OnlyPet Buddy | ROLA Mini |
|---|---|---|
| Average active play per session, all 10 cats | 40.3 seconds | 37.2 seconds |
| Cats that played at least once | 9 of 10 | 9 of 10 |
| Average time to first play, the 9 cats that played with both | 33.6 seconds | 35.2 seconds |
Buddy recorded 3.1 seconds more active play per session on average. Five cats played longer with Buddy, four with Mini, and one played with neither. The difference was small and describes these complete play setups. It gives some support for Buddy's included play options, while the stronger purchase reason remains having laser and physical teaser choices available together. For owners, that means more ways to invite a cat into a short game; the records do not establish a broad preference among cats.
Charging and obstacle handling change how you use it
Buddy's dock can reduce the need to reconnect a charging cable after a session when the robot can detect and reach it. Place the dock in an open, accessible area and check the return path before relying on it while away. Infrared return does not provide reliable room-to-room navigation back to the charger.
Mini takes a different approach: manual charging and an extended-use battery claim. That may suit occasional check-ins if you are comfortable reconnecting it when needed. Enabot's support page explains charging and the absence of automatic obstacle avoidance.
Buddy's TOF obstacle avoidance is an additional aid around indoor obstacles, rather than a promise that it will never become stuck. Clear loose cables and check rug edges. Neither robot has fall detection, so keep stairs and drops separated from the operating area.
For Buddy's scheduled sessions, think of a short loop nearby. A three-minute patrol is useful as a scheduled movement option; it does not mean the robot will search the house, find a hidden cat or deliver three minutes of engaged play every time.
A home-use record for planning your charging setup
OnlyPet's published indoor-cat interaction record, involving 15 cats and 225 formal cat-days, logged 138 successful docking/recharge events from 147 attempts (93.9%). This separate brand-run exploratory study used different interaction schedules and did not include ROLA Mini. Its result provides a reference for OnlyPet's charging routine in those settings, rather than a head-to-head reliability score or a guarantee for your home. View the Research and Test Data Center for the methods and limitations, and verify Buddy's return from your intended operating area.
What do you get without a subscription
Buddy's core driving, two-way voice and manual laser play do not require a paid subscription. Rolling access to the latest three days of cloud history is included, with longer retention optional. This can suit owners who want to check recent moments without immediately choosing a longer storage plan.
Mini includes local storage and offers Cloud+ separately. Local recording and paid cloud playback are different services; a cloud upgrade should not be described as a charge required for every basic function. Review the service you actually want before adding subscription costs to either purchase.
Check your rooms before choosing
Walk the route between the robot's starting point and your cat's usual resting places. Closed doors, high thresholds and thick rugs can matter more than a small difference in published climbing figures. A manufacturer's threshold limit does not guarantee that a particular doorway or floor covering will work.
Check Wi-Fi along the route as well. A robot that can physically reach an area still needs a usable connection for remote driving, video and voice.
Buddy can follow a cat already in view, but you steer it to another accessible room. Its additional functions should be considered within that owner-directed style of use.
Make play comfortable for your cat
The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines recommend opportunities for play and predatory behavior, alongside positive human–cat interaction. These are general care principles, not evidence that one robot improves a cat's health or behavior more than another.
Introduce Buddy while you are present. Let your cat approach a stationary device before trying slow movements, and leave an easy route to move away. Keep laser light away from eyes, offer opportunities to catch a suitable physical toy and stop when your cat loses interest or seems uncomfortable. Inspect teasers for damage and choose accessories appropriate to your cat's chewing habits.
Is Buddy worth the extra thirty dollars
Choose Buddy if remote play is a priority. Its combination of laser control, included teasers, obstacle avoidance and conditional automatic return gives you more ways to interact and manage a session. These additions are the clearest reasons to spend the extra $30 at the checked prices.
Choose Mini if basic mobile viewing is enough. Its lower upfront cost and included local storage may be a better match if you mainly want to move the viewpoint and talk to your pet, and are comfortable with manual charging.
Before ordering, compare the live package and availability. Your cat's response and your home's layout determine how useful either robot will be in practice.
