Participants and eligibility
Twelve cats were recruited and 10 provided valid records. Cats ranged from 1 to 14 years old and included curious, cautious, high-energy, calm, and senior cats from single-cat and multi-cat households.
Eligible cats lived indoors, had lived in the current home for at least three months, had no recent illness, pain, or medication change, and had owners able to maintain reasonably stable feeding and bedtime schedules. In multi-cat homes, the target cat had to be identifiable by coat pattern or collar. Cats known to react strongly to moving household robots first completed a separated adaptation step.

Five cats completed the usual routine first and five completed the structured routine first. This crossover order reduced the chance that a calmer second week alone would explain the result. After midnight, Onlypet was used for observation only; play, laser, teaser, pet sounds, and owner recordings were not activated in response to vocalization.
Experiment 1: Short daytime interaction
Procedure
Each cat completed nine sessions: 3, 5, and 8 minutes once in the morning, afternoon, and pre-bed period. Order was randomized, producing 90 sessions in total. The primary response was classified as approach, chase/play, distant observation, avoidance, or no clear response. Observers also recorded latency, interaction time, over-arousal signs, and whether the cat returned to a calm state within five minutes.

Observed signal: In this sample, 3-5 minute sessions produced more consistent attention or interaction and fewer over-arousal events than 8-minute sessions. This does not establish a universal maximum play duration.
Experiment 2: Bedtime play-eat-quiet routine
Procedure
The structured routine began about 60 minutes before lights-out, with an allowed window of 45-90 minutes: three minutes of low-speed movement or teaser play, two minutes of rest, two minutes of chase-style play, a final physical “catch” with a toy or food, the cat's normal dinner or part of its daily ration, and then no further Onlypet sound or interaction. Lights-out followed 15-30 minutes later.
Each condition included 10 cats across seven nights, for 70 cat-nights per condition and 140 cat-nights total.

Observed association: The structured routine was associated with fewer early-night reactivation events and fewer owner wake-ups. Multiple variables changed together, so the study cannot isolate the device from timing, feeding, consistency, or owner behavior.
Experiment 3: Low-light and dark-room observation
Procedure
A separate fixed camera was used as the comparison. Fifty valid checks covered the living room, hallway, bedroom doorway, litter area, and feeding area under approximately 1-5 lux and lights-off conditions. Two reviewers judged whether the cat was located and whether the activity was identifiable; an activity counted as identifiable only when both reviewers agreed.

The median mobile search time was 28 seconds. Movement caused a cat to look back in 11/50 checks, briefly move away in 3/50, and contributed to one failed observation. Noticeable movement blur occurred in 4/50 checks. This was a home walkthrough, not a laboratory camera-certification test.
Experiment 4: Natural nighttime response log
Across 70 cat-nights, owners recorded naturally occurring wake-up attempts between midnight and 6 a.m. Onlypet remained a quiet observation tool. There were 34 wake-up attempts: owners did not respond to 29 and responded to five for a practical need. A further attempt within 30 minutes occurred after 6/29 non-response events (20.7%) and 4/5 response events (80.0%).
This small observational comparison cannot establish causality: the five events that required a response may have been more intense from the outset. Experiment 5: Home-route and obstacle checks
Routes were checked manually in daylight before any scheduled use. Each surface or obstacle category received 30 attempts. Success required completion within 60 seconds without help, entanglement, a knocked-over object, or obvious loss of control.

Recorded exceptions included four thin-rug edge stalls, five cable-contact or entanglement events, three litter-mat stalls, three failed 11 mm threshold attempts, and two minor furniture contacts. There were no tip-overs, spilled water bowls, or recorded cat injuries. Loose cables, thin rugs, litter mats, water bowls, stairs, balconies, and open drops should be cleared or excluded from routes.
Stopping and safety rules
A session stopped for hiding longer than two minutes, sustained growling/hissing/distress vocalization, repeated forceful biting or lunging, collision with furniture, open-mouth breathing or obvious panting, inability to settle within 10 minutes, cable entanglement, or a loose attachment. A cat with two stop events left the automated-interaction portion but could remain in static observation.
When laser play was used, it was manually controlled, aimed only at a matte floor, and kept away from cats' and people's eyes, mirrors, reflective metal, stairs, and open drops. The laser was not used after midnight or in response to nighttime vocalization.
Limitations
- Small sample and short observation windows limit generalizability.
- Owners knew which routine they were using and could not be blinded.
- The bedtime condition changed play timing, feeding sequence, and owner response together.
- Home layouts, cat temperament, household schedules, and owner execution varied.
- The nighttime response log was observational and had only five response events.
- The camera comparison assessed one fixed position and does not represent every fixed-camera installation.
